Our resident Trainer & Behaviourist is Sara Eldrett. Sara has studied an Animal Behaviour Degree at the University of Lincoln for three years and is now updating her qualifications by carrying out an Advanced Diploma in the Practical Aspects of Companion Pet Behaviour and Training.

Combining this with her experience in working with many animals in different types of situations including working as the Animal Behaviourist for the RSPCA, she is confident in giving help and advice with training and behaviour.

When you first contact us for a behavioural assessment we will come to you for a free Home Visit to discuss options and help you to fill in a behavioural consult form which you will need to send back to us. We will then contact you to organise a consultation where we can get to the bottom of the problem and look at the best way to help you and your pet.

A Dog Called Wander is able to offer help with a wide range of behavioural problems in Cats and Dogs, such as;

  • Socialisation Issues

Socialisation is an important step in a puppies' development in learning about itself and how to interact with its own species.

  • Separation Anxiety

An animal can show extreme anxiety when left alone in a house, cattery or kennel. This can be particulary distressing for an owner especially if their pet is being destructive to its surroundings or even to itself.

  • Aggression

It is very important to address any form of aggression, whether it is pet to people aggression or pet to pet aggression, to prevent injury to both animal and owner. Aggression is a behavioural problem that should NEVER be ignored.

  • Fears and Phobias

Fears and phobias are both distressing for the owner and the animal. Steps can be taken to help your pet to relax in the presence of their fear, common fears are loud noises and strangers.

When you first contact us for training consultations, we will come out for a free home visit to discuss what training you think you and your dog need. We will then organise an appropriate time for your first one to one training session. It is advisable that all the family can attend the training sessions as everyone in the household should be involved.

Training advice that A Dog Called Wander gives includes;

  • Basic Training

The main commands that are used in basic training include; Sit, Down, Leave, Stay and Come. It is very important to achieve basic control over your dog and is very beneficial for puppies and rescue dogs which may not have had much training early on. The earlier you start training with your dog the better!

  • Recall Problems

It is extremely important to be able to call your dog back to you especially if he is off the lead. It can prevent accidents, which is important if your dog is heading towards a danger, such as a busy road.

  • House Soiling

House soiling is mainly a problem for the owner but it can be a sign for an underlying problem such as lack of training or anxiety.
